Civil Air Patrol’s small Unmanned Aerial Systems program has recorded its first life saved, thanks to a successful North Carolina Wing search Aug. 17 for an elderly dementia patient.

The sUAS team – Majs. Ricky Jones and Doug Moody and Capt. Robert Rimmer, team leader – was deployed to join the search in Scotland County, North Carolina, along with two ground teams. The state Emergency Management System requested CAP assistance after a 78-year-old woman wandered away from her senior living home, and the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center authorized the mission.

After the woman was located, the sUAS and ground teams were recognized by First Air Force's AFRCC for their contributions in saving her.

"Congratulations to the North Carolina Wing and all the gallant North Carolina Wing members of the emergency services teams that answered the call," said Col. Larry Ragland, a member of CAP’s Board of Governors and a former North Carolina Wing commander and national executive officer.

"My congratulations on a job well done,” said Col. Edward P. Angelovich, wing commander.

Team members Jones and Rimmer belong to the Pitt-Greenville Composite Squadron; Jones is the squadron’s operations officer and Rimmer is deputy commander. Moody is the North Carolina Wing’s assistant director of education.
