Minn. Wing Hosts Young Aviation Art Contest Winners

Capt. Randall S. Knox
Public Affairs Officer
Minnesota Wing

“My Dream to Fly” was the theme when the Minnesota Wing hosted the 2019 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest Awards Ceremony, with the state Department of Transportation Office of Aeronautics – the contest’s sponsor – presenting awards to nine youth winners.

CAP Col. Brent Halweg, a Delta Air Lines pilot and former Minnesota Wing commander, was keynote speaker for the event, held at Wing Headquarters in South St. Paul.

Halweg spoke about his own youthful dream to fly and his journey through school and U.S. Air Force pilot training before finally becoming a commercial airline pilot. He talked about conquering his fears to achieve his dream and encouraged his listeners to overcome their own fears and apprehensions to accomplish their goals.

After the awards ceremony, Minnesota Wing members provided a number of aerospace education opportunities for their young guests. Fourteen members of the wing helped plan, organize and conduct Civil Air Patrol Cessna aircraft tours, a drone demonstration, operation of flight simulators and building of paper “stomp rockets” while introducing the youth and their families to the opportunities available in CAP.
