Next Commander Chosen for Iowa Wing

Lt. Col. Sean McClanahan

LIAWG_Patcht. Col. Sean McClanahan, Iowa Wing chief of staff, has been selected as the wing’s next commander. 

McClanahan is set to assume command June 1 from Col. Jonathan Lartigue.

An Iowa Wing member since December 2021, he became the wing’s director of logistics and of communications the following month and continues to fill those positions. He has been chief of staff since December 2022.

McClanahan joined Civil Air Patrol in February 2014 as a Delaware Wing member.  He served as the wing’s government relations officer and Legislative Squadron commander from June 2018-November 2021 and also filled numerous roles at the wing and squadron levels, including emergency services office and director of DE Wingoperations, of logistics, of information technology, and of communications.

In addition to his Civil Air Patrol activities, McClanahan has a record of public service in the public sector/ He is licensed as an advanced class amateur radio operator and serves as the amateur radio emergency coordinator for Greene County.

He also has a history of volunteer firefighting. He was recognized as Firefighter of the Year in 1984 in the  Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire Department in Fairfax County, Virginia, and qualified as an emergency medical technician as a member of that department.

He holds multiple qualification as an information technology professional, with more than 15 years of experience in network administration, security, and compliance.
