Alabama Wing cadets preparing to staff wing’s summer encampment participated in drill training alongside U.S. Air Force Officer Training School students at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, enabling them to  refine their drill, command presence, and leadership skills while working directly with future Air Force officers.

Guiding the cadets was Air Force Tech. Sgt. Cally Hatrick, a military training instructor who provided hands-on learning experiences and expert feedback. Hatrick’s mentorship helped prepare the cadets for their upcoming roles leading younger cadets at the summer encampment, set for May 31-June 7 at Marion Military Institute.

“I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to not only participate in but also lead OTS drill training,” said Cadet 2nd Lt. Noah Branson of the Bessemer Composite Squadron. “It gave me the chance to see how drill instruction is conducted in the Air Force and review the six-step drill teaching process.

“Working with future Air Force officers allowed me to refine my skills and gain valuable insight into the OTS experience. The best part was connecting with amazing people and expanding my knowledge of leadership.”

“I got a lot out of the exercise,” said Cadet Capt. Owen Patty of the Etowah Cadet Squadron. “I was able to advance my knowledge of drill and gain some helpful tools for teaching.

“I also received valuable advice on how to pursue my future plans of serving in the Air Force, and I had a lot of fun in the process.”

Cadets also had the opportunity to share insights into Civil Air Patrol’s mission and role with the Air Force students.

“The opportunity was invaluable — not only for the cadets, who benefited from direct interaction and feedback from subject matter experts, but also for the adults, who gained exposure to Civil Air Patrol at a professional level,” said Master Sgt. Jason Austin, encampment training officer and deputy commander for cadets for the Mountain Lakes Composite Squadron.

“The cadets showcased their professionalism and demonstrated to the OTS students that they are the future leaders we are developing them into.”
