Cadet Maj. Brock Buak of the California Wing’s Eugene L. Carnahan Cadet Squadron 85 has drawn on a combination of Civil Air Patrol community service, academics, and athletics to achieve appointments to four military academies this year.
Along with appointments to the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine, the three-year CAP member also received a full Army ROTC scholarship should he choose that route.
Buak, executive officer of the California Cadet Corps and former cadet commander for the Placerville-based Carnahan squadron, joined CAP on Feb. 1, 2022.
He attends Union Mine High School, where he competes on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams. A 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association High School Scholar All-American, he has served as president of Union Mine High’s National Honor Society and as two-term president of the Key Club.
By the end of his junior year, Buak had earned two associate degrees from Sierra College in Rocklin.
Outside Civil Air Patrol, school, and sports, the cadet works on his family’s farm in Shingle Springs, raising pigs, sheep, chickens, and rabbits.
Buak is weighing his academy options and plans to make his final decision by April. His career goal is to serve his country as a military officer in either civil engineering or military intelligence.
Numerous cadets training in community service, aerospace education, leadership, emergency services, military customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, physical fitness, and character development since the Carnahan squadron’s founding in 1980 have gone on to qualify for and accept appointments to military academies — most recently former cadet Meth Ranaweera, who began attending The Citadel (Military Academy of South Carolina) in 2023, and Cadet Tech. Sgt. Lucas Roth, who enrolled in the Air Force Academy last year._____Capt. Steve AnderlyAssistant Public Affairs OfficerEugene L. Carnahan Cadet Squadron 85California Wing
