More than 80 Civil Air Patrol members participated Aug. 9-11 in the California Wing Emergency Services Training Academy, with organizers conducting 50 sorties totaling 90½ flight hours by nine CAP aircraft.

On the ground, the training also involved five CAP vehicles and 10 missions.

In all, 82 members, including 25 cadets, received training at Los Angeles’ Whiteman Airport. Fernando Senior Squadron 35 led the training, with Maj. Marc Sobel — the wing’s assistant director of operations — serving as incident commander.

Training involved aircrews, ground teams, and operational personnel, including:

  • Eight mission pilot mentors

  • Eight mission pilot trainees

  • 12 mission observer trainees

  • 18 ground team members

  • 11 urban direction finding team members

In addition, eight base staff members carried out standard roles, 11 were trainees, and eight participated in Introductory Communications User Training.

Also, California Disaster Service Workers application papers were signed and notarized for 12 adult members and three cadets.

The main goal was to provide comprehensive training opportunities for aircrews and ground teams to effectively collaborate while also giving base staff experience in managing large-scale operations.____Capt. Brigitte FurraPublic Affairs OfficerSan Diego GroupCalifornia Wing
