Two Maine Wing cadets have accepted appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy, and a third will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Two of the three hail from the Portland-based 58th Composite Squadron.

Bound for the Naval Academy are:

  • Cadet Lt. Col. Caroline Benson of the 58th squadron and

  • Cadet Capt. Felicity Jackson of the Brunswick Composite Squadron.

Set to enroll at West Point is:

  • Cadet 2nd Lt. Riley Record, also a member of the 58th squadron.

“In my tenure in the Maine Wing, I have not seen this many cadets being accepted to our service academies,” said Col. Mark Hyland, wing commander. “We are proud for our small role in the success of these cadets and know they will represent our state well and serve our nation with distinction.”

Benson, a Civil Air Patrol member since August 2020, participated in a variety of clubs at Scarborough High School, such as the Key Club, Environmental Club of Scarborough, Buddy System, and National Honor Society. She played soccer and competed in indoor trac, and outdoor track as the track teams’ captain.

Jackson joined CAP in March 2021. She was a captain of Brunswick High’s girls indoor and outdoor track and field teams and also participated in cross country and field hockey. She was also a founding member and co-head delegate of the Brunswick chapter of the Model United Nations, an active member of the Brunswick Scholastic Chess Club, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Record, who joined CAP in October 2021, was a captain of the cross country and Nordic skiing teams at Greely High School in Cumberland as well as a member of the lacrosse and track teams. She was also a Class of 2025 class officer, a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and student representative on the Maine School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors Curriculum Committee.

All three cadets credit their experience in Civil Air Patrol as a major factor in their journey to a service academy appointment.   _____Maj. Jeff PiercePublic Affairs OfficerMaine Wing
