Each September, National Preparedness Month reminds us that emergencies can happen at any time, often with little warning. This year’s theme, Preparedness Starts at Home, emphasizes that the most effective step toward resilience begins with individual and family readiness.

Civil Air Patrol is proud to serve communities nationwide during disasters through search and rescue, aerial reconnaissance, and emergency support. But preparedness is not just for responders — every household can take action today to reduce risk and recover more quickly when faced with a crisis.

This year, all Americans are encouraged to take four key actions:

  • Know the hazards in your area, from wildfires to severe weather, and understand the steps needed to stay safe.

  • Make a family emergency plan that includes communication methods, meeting places, and contacts outside the local area.

  • Build an emergency supply kit with essentials like food, water, first aid items, medications, and important documents.

  • Get involved in your community by supporting preparedness activities, volunteering, or participating in training.

Preparedness starts with one small step, whether it’s talking through a plan at the dinner table or adding a few items to your supply kit. By acting now, you not only protect your own family but also contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.

Don’t wait until disaster strikes. Take action today, because preparedness truly starts at home.
