Cadets in the New Jersey Wing’s Twin Pine Composite Squadron have teamed up with local residents and elementary school students to collect eclipse-viewing glasses for a South American school eager to view an annular solar eclipse Oct. 2.
In a campaign initiated by the Twin Pine cadets and Principal Kelly Kawalek of Lore Elementary, more than 2,000 solar eclipse glasses have been donated for students at Falkland Islands Community School, more than 6,000 miles south near the tip of South America.
The glasses proved to be popular accessories across North America during the April 8 total solar eclipse.
Using the glasses, often discarded after a single use, provides the opportunity for an extraordinary educational experience. The Falkland Islands school was chosen as recipient not only for its geographical alignment with the upcoming eclipse but also for eagerness to embrace learning opportunities.
“Initiatives like these remind us of the power we hold to make a difference, no matter how young or small our community may be,” said 1st Lt. Nicholas Kunchandy, Twin Pine squadron commander.
“They underscore the importance of global citizenship and the responsibility we have to share our resources and experiences with others around the world.”_____2nd Lt. Lucy Couvertier Public Affairs Officer Twin Pine Composite Squadron New Jersey Wing
