Members from across the New York Wing and Northeast Region recently participated in the wing’s annual Ground Search and Rescue Academy, enhancing their land navigation and emergency services skills through a comprehensive six-day training program
Cadets and adult members taking part in Ground Team Member 1, 2, and 3 courses received advanced instruction in essential skills such as map and compass navigation, survival techniques, and mission readiness.
The Ground Team Member 1 students took on the task of establishing a landing zone for two U.S. Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopters.
The mission concluded with a surprise — orientation flights that provided the participants with view of their training environment from above.
Meanwhile, Ground Team Member 2 students took their training to the next level by collaborating with canine search teams, gaining valuable insights into the integration of animal assistance in search and rescue missions.
The Ground Team Member 3 students concentrated on foundational skills, including map-reading, compass use, fire-building, and basic first aid, ensuring they’re well-equipped for future missions.
In addition to ground team training, participants also engaged in specialized courses in small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Communications, and Incident Management. The communications team consisted of mission radio operators and communications unit leaders. Incident Management training included ground branch directors and mission dtaff assistants.
“This academy is crucial for building the capabilities of our members,” said Master Sgt. Jason Somers, academy director. “Participants not only learn how to navigate challenging terrain but also how to work seamlessly with other emergency services, including canine search teams and aerial support.”
The training also fostered a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among members.
