Civil Air Patrol cadets from across central Texas devoted a full day to military drill instruction and leadership development at the Texas Wing Group 5 Drill and Ceremonies School, held at Port San Antonio and hosted by the Lackland Cadet Squadron.
The event brought together 57 participants —23 cadet students, 21 cadet staff, and 13 adult members — representing all eight cadet and composite squadrons in Group V. Participants traveled from as far as Temple, 165 miles to the northeast, to participate, marking the first group-level cadet program activity in several years.
The school was designed to train cadets in drill movements ranging from Achievement 1 to the Wright Brothers Drill Test.
“We saw cadets gain confidence with each drill block, and our staff did an excellent job maintaining a tight, focused schedule,” said 1st Lt. Rodrigo Lopez, who directed the activity and is Group V cadet activities officer and the Lackland squadron’s deputy commander for cadets.
“It was rewarding to see the cadet cadre step into leadership roles and deliver high-quality instruction.”

Two classroom sessions, one focused on U.S. Air Force traditions and the other examining teamwork and leadership, were interspersed throughout the day to provide context and reinforce cadet leadership skills.
Charlie Flight earned top honors during the culminating drill competition, recognized for their synchronization, leadership, and attention to detail.
“Discipline in motion, pride in precision — our Drill and Ceremonies School shapes future leaders of Civil Air Patrol through unity, excellence, and integrity in every step,” said Cadet Maj. Cameron Bowen of the Randolph Composite Squadron, the school’s cadet commandant.
Staff and students both walked away from the day with new skills and a renewed sense of purpose.
“This school sets a solid foundation for regular Group 5 cadet programs,” Lopez said. “With a few tweaks, it can grow into a flagship training opportunity for our area.”_____2nd Lt. Samuel CaspersPublic Affairs OfficerTexas Wing
