The Utah Wing has launched its first new squadron in seven years with the activation of the Diamondback Cadet Squadron at the Utah Military Academy in Lehi.

Cadets and adult members from the Phantom Composite and Phoenix Cadet squadrons gathered Jan. 9 with their Diamondback counterparts for the activation ceremony to offer their congratulations and assist with various tasks. Also present were various dignitaries, including active and retired military personnel, local and state public officials, Utah Military Academy school officials, and local and state media representatives.

Col. Andreas Wesemann, Utah Wing commander, delivered a  message to the cadets present, emphasizing Civil Air Patrol’s core values: integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect.

“I challenge each cadet to rise above, to be different,” Wesemann said. “Whether in uniform or not, you represent something greater than yourself. Civil Air Patrol is part of the Air Force Total Force … Always remember what you stand for and the legacy you uphold.”

The wing commander also cited Utah’s state motto, “Life Elevated.”

“My challenge to you, even if you’re not in Civil Air Patrol, is to embrace ‘Service Elevated,’” Wesemann told those assembled. “Our mission is clear: ‘Volunteers serving America’s communities.’

“Let this commitment to service define who we are and what we stand for.”

During the ceremony, 1st Lt. Casey Smith formally assumed command of the new squadron, the Utah Wing’s 15th.

In his address, Smith shared a promise he’s upheld since first meeting the Diamondback cadets.

“My goal is to prepare you for whatever you want to do after school,” he said. “Whether it’s a service academy, college, technical school, or a job, you’ll be able to stand up proudly and say, ‘I’m ready.’”

Smith joined CAP in November 2012. He previously served in the Salt Lake Senior Squadron, Cedar Mustangs and Vernal composite squadrons, and Phoenix ad Black Widows cadet squadrons as well as the Washington Wing’s Columbia Basin Composite Squadron, filling numerous leadership positions at various levels, including Utah Wing staff.
