Cadet Col. Lucas Morrow is the Washington Wing’s newest recipient of the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award, Civil Air Patrol’s top cadet honor.

Morrow joined the less than one-half of 1% of cadets who achieve the honor when he received his Spaatz award at the wing conference from Brig. Gen. R. Jason Bailey, CAP national deputy commander, and Col. Brett Dolnick, then Washington Wing commander and now commander of the Pacific Region.

A member of the Northshore Composite Squadron, Morrow joined CAP in February 2020. He has since been recognized with two Meritorious Service Awards, three Wing Commander’s Commendations, one Region Commander’s Commendation, seven achievement awards, and an Air and Space Forces Association Cadet of the Year Award. Honored as 2024 Pacific Region Cadet of the Year, in February he was one of 20 cadets participating in CAP’s annual Civic Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C., in February.

He has served as cadet commander of both the Northside squadron and Green Darner 5 Cyber Education Camp and as chair of the wing Cadet Advisory Council.

Morrow is the Washington Wing’s cadet activities officer and Pacific Region Cadet Advisory Council recorder. He has attended six encampments and served as cadet plans and curriculum officer at Cascade Falcon XXVII, the Washington Wing encampment, in 2024. He will serve as Squadron 3 commander for Cascade Falcon XXVIII this summer.

Recognized as the 2023 Washington Wing Communicator of the Year, he operates a net control station for HF and VHF nets in the wing’s communications section while assisting at the national level with the CAP Geospatial Program.

Outside Civil Air Patrol, Morrow participates in the Distributive Education Clubs of America —  a high school club program that “prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, focusing on developing skills like public speaking, teamwork, and leadership through various activities and competitions. He’s a two-time state finalist in that program and an international qualifier.

He’s also a high school soccer referee, in charge of games like club soccer and prestigious events such as Elite Club National League and Girls Academy. Morrow was named Local Youth Referee of the Year.

In receiving the Spaatz award, Morrow used the opportunity to present the Torch Award — established to recognize mentors who had the  most impact on a Spaatz award recipient — to  Capt. Lacee Beddo of the  Mount Rainier Composite Squadron. He also chose Maj. Jeramee Scherer of the Northside squadron, who wasn’t present, for a Torch Award.

Spaatz award recipients must complete the CAP cadet program’s 16 achievements, then passa rigorous cumulative battery consisting of a strenuous physical fitness exam, a written essay on a persistent moral issue, and two 60-question cumulative exams on aerospace and leadership.  _____Cadet 1st Lt.
