Members of the Florida Wing’s Tamiami Composite Squadron stepped up to work alongside local police and security May 24-25 at Miami Beach’s Hyundai Air &Sea Show, adding a Civil Air Patrol element to the nationally televised all-military air show.
Adult members and cadets’ roles ranged from manning observation towers and rooftops to providing first aid to visitors. Miami Beach Ocean Rescue staff praised members for their prompt response when crowd control was required to keep emergency service lanes open for their vehicles.
Squadron members also carried out counter-drone operations to keep the skies safe and clear.
“When we spotted a drone in the air … we were able to use our equipment to detect and report it to law enforcement and airshow security,” Cadet 1st Lt. Mateo Machado said.
The participating members were able to apply a variety of skills they had learned, such as teamwork, first aid, radio communications, situational awareness, and technical expertise, Machado said._____Capt.
